Michele S. Phillips

Michele Phillips has more than 35 years of progressive experience in financial management and planning, operational performance improvement, tactical competitive intelligence, and technology strategies.

Michele graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Pennsylvania, a member of the Ivy League, and one of the most prestigious institutions of higher learning. She received her MBA from the College of William and Mary – one of the top public institutions in the country – where she graduated 1st in class. Michele also holds a CPA license, and is both a Certified Clinical Research Coordinator and a Certified Purchasing Manager.

Michele recently retired from Wake Forest University where she served for eight years as Executive Advisor, Finance and as Associate Vice President, Budget & Financial Planning. During her tenure, Michele’s focus was on macro level performance, strategic planning, and university-wide budgeting. She guided teams in developing responsibility centered financial models, reforming management and trustee reporting, improving revenue and cost structures, and refining competitive intelligence for making strategic investments.

Prior to being recruited by Wake Forest University, Michele was Associate Dean and CFO for the University of North Carolina – School of Medicine. In that role, she managed a $700m enterprise budget for research, clinical, and academic endeavors. As Associate Dean, Michele also guided 60 departments in reengineering business processes, restructuring clinical programs based on market analytics, and developing strategies to increase NIH ranking in research funding. Throughout her five year tenure, she represented the School of Medicine’s interests in policy development to UNC Chapel Hill senior leadership, and was liaison to UNC Physicians, UNC Hospitals, and the Medical Foundation.

In the two decades before joining UNC, Michele worked in high technology R&D firms. Michele served as Business Director at SAS Institute – the world’s leader in business analytics. In this very fluid and high technology environment, Michele gained significant experience managing risk through in-depth market research and directing corporate budgeting. Additionally, Michele managed technology acquisition and coordinated cross functional teams in transitioning marketing, operational, and R&D technology platforms. Michele’s positions at IBM and Sentara Health Systems provided yet further insights into highly competitive and research intensive environments.

Michele has completed rigorous training in leadership effectiveness as offered by the Center for Creative Leadership and the Hayes Group. In 2011, Wake Forest University nominated Michele to attend the demanding 9-month Leadership Winston Salem Program in which business leaders learn to transform communities via civic engagement and building social capital. In this role as a servant leader, Michele has received awards for her contributions to the American Red Cross Disaster Services and the Forsyth Special Children’s School. Most recently, she become a YMCA trained ESL Literacy Tutor for adult learners. As a business and community leader, Michele has been recognized for her success in developing environments that encourage passion for an organization’s mission.
